Tips for Renters

Summer storms in June can pop up quickly, especially in areas that experience heavy rainfall, flash floods, and strong winds. Renters may not be responsible for major structural repairs, but that doesn't mean you're off the hook when it comes to preparation. Taking proactive steps now can protect your belongings and prevent costly damages down the road.

Here are a few tips to make sure your rental is storm-ready this June:

1. Check Outdoor Drains and Gutters
If your unit has access to a balcony, patio, or entryway, make sure any nearby drains are free from leaves and debris. Clogged drains can lead to water pooling, which may seep into the property. Notify your landlord if gutters are blocked or damaged.

2. Secure or Store Outdoor Items
High winds can turn patio furniture, grills, and even potted plants into dangerous projectiles. Store or securely anchor anything light enough to move in a strong gust.

3. Inspect Windows and Doors
Storms can exploit the smallest weaknesses. Check for drafts or loose seals around windows and doors. These can let in water or even break under pressure. Report any issues to your property manager.

4. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Have essentials on hand: bottled water, non-perishable snacks, flashlights, a power bank, and important documents in a waterproof bag. Even a short-term outage can be frustrating without a plan.

5. Know Who to Call
Keep your property manager’s emergency number easily accessible. Know the difference between a maintenance request and an emergency. For example, a leaking ceiling during a storm is urgent; a dripping faucet can wait until the next business day.

Being proactive keeps your home safe and gives you peace of mind when the clouds roll in. Whether it’s your first storm season in this property or your fifth, a few preventive actions can make a world of difference.
